I'm I feeding my cat enough

How do you know if your feeding your cat enough. I give my little guy (2 and a half.) 1/4 cup of Blue Buffalo in the AM. 1/4 in the evening. He's 12 lbs.  Lately, he sits by his dish and looks at me between meals. Not sure I'm giving him enough? Do their appetites increase in the winter months?

I'd say give him a quarter cup in the afternoon for lunch. Me, I used to just make sure my cats always had dry food in their bowls. They never got fat, and they nibbled all day. My reason for this is that cats use a lot of energy and that food keeps their energy up. Every now and then I'd give them a treat of canned food, or a real treat of tuna.

If a little knowledge is a dangerous thing, then that makes me a burning truck filled with TNT hurtling through a rocket fuel depot.

If he always cleans his plate and continues to sit there, he probably wants more.  You could raise his servings, until he starts leaving food uneaten.  Typically, well provided-for cats do not continue eating once they're full, unlike dogs, who will stuff themselves until they vomit.  And yes, it is instictive to eat more during the winter months, for cats AND humans!

I'd agree with you, but then we'd both be wrong.

It is not possible for you to feed an "all the time hungry" cat enough. Cats are clever buggers and they learn quickly to con you into feeding them more than they actually require. Further, the more they eat - the more they can eat.

They look at you and sit by their bowl because they are trying to communicate with you by means of ESP. He (or she) is saying "feed me feed me ...". And of course, fools that humans be - will feed these cats.

So - the short answer to your question - is NO YOU ARE NOT FEEDING THIS CAT AS MUCH AS HE (OR SHE) WANTS. Even though you may be feeding (or even overfeeding) this cat enough.

Is Blue Buffalo a brand of cat food? If so, look at the package. It will tell you how much food to feed the cat, usually a certain amount by weight. That sounds like a really small amount of food to me, though. I feed my 7 lb. cat Iams, and she gets more food than that each day.

If Blue Buffalo isn't cat food, you need to switch to a cat food so your cat gets taurine in his diet, or he'll be malnourished.

Best thing to do is get to a vet. We have a Bombay (pure black and sweeter than sugar) but she has problems with fleas and we had to get her treated for worms and mange. She's great now, all healthy and real snuggly. Bombays just have worse problems with demodectic mange than other breeds, but ...

How do you treat tufting on cats

If the cat has not been to the vet for a spell, get it checked. Then, get a grooming comb and go to work. If the cat acts like it is going to turn on you or climbs to the top of the chimney, just cut them out next time y'all are together on a friendly basis.
