Discuss GrammaSheila53's answer to: Which Fairy Tale is the Scariest?

Which fairy tale do YOU find to be the scariest? Which would you NEVER read to your kids?

Pretty sure "Cutie Pi" and I read the same blog;-)  My mother read to us daily and fairy tales were always on the agenda.  I don't recall ever having nightmares about any of the stories.  I believe hearing that monsters can be beaten is cathartic for kids as they work out their own fears.  As a mother of 6, foster mother to 14, and grandmother of 15, I have never hesitated to read Fairy Tales to kids.  The modern versions are totally sanitized, and when reading aloud one can always edit the contents of older versions for the listener.  Keep in mind that when these tales were being handed down, life was short, brutal, and uncertain.

"Once upon a time a lawyer walked through the desert.  It was a lovely spring morning.  He walked too near a rock and a rattlesnake jumped out and bit him.

The lawyer spent the next hour trying to get the rattlesnake off of his leg, and then the poison went to work.  The Park Ranger arrived, gasped at the horrible scene, and sped the victim to the hospital.

The hospital couldn't help because they were so busy with other emergencies so the Ranger went to the town veterinarian.  It was out of the veterinarian's field of expertise so they went to the aging Tribal Shaman.  He could only make the dying less painful.  Nature took its course and the tribal members gathered aroud to bid farewell to the victim.

In one accord, they placed their hats over their hearts and said, "Poor snake."

The lawyer was fine, but the nasty taste of a lawyer in its mouth was too much for the snake to handle.

And they all lived happily ever after."
