Because he doesn't really care about the environment. He started a company to sell "carbon credits" that allows people to (get this) -pay him- for damage -they- do to the environment. He is capitalizing on the panic he started, and getting rich from the "green" movement. Even if someone busted him publicly for using those bottles, he could just claim to buy credits to offset it. What a bullshitting, hypocritical, two-faced liar!
Ban the plastic water bottle is a fad whose time has come and gone. People should be drinking healthy water instead of a high fructose laden soft drink and that's what is going to replace the convenience of bottled water. Sure, manufacturers of refillable bottles would have you think they are the answer for eliminating plastic pollution and they do have their place. I don't think they will work very well in Haiti right now. What we need are plastic water bottles that are better for the environment and for me that would be biodegradable plastic water bottles. Normal PET plastic is so durable that it doesn't go away. Some might argue that isn't all that bad as a standard PET bottle in a landfill is actually sequestered CO2. A lot (not all) of the water we find in bottled water is produced by small businesses that use their private spring to fill their bottles. The carbon footprint for those companies is small as most of their water is sold locally. I think we're going to see a lot of plastic water bottles coming to the rescue of the people of Haiti; thank goodness there are business that will be able to provide clean bottled drinking water.
