No one is forced to reply to an email.  So even if it is delivered promptly (which does not always happen; it may take 15 minutes or an hour) and read (which does not always happen right away), you may not get a reply.  If you have a simple question like "Is Bob Hope dead?" you may get a quick yes or no.  If you are inviting something like dinner, people may have to consult with others before replying.  If you ask difficult questions, it may take a while before someone is willing to take the time to answer.
