Eliot Spitzer

Doesn't Eliot Spitzer has the right to go to a prostitute, like any other American Citizen?

What could be the implications of this story on his political career?

Hi,
Yes, ligally he is free to go, like any other American citizen can, to a prostitute.  It is NOT a ligal issue, but an issue of moral and double face.... "Mr. Clean" is not "clean" any more.... His real face was revealed in public.  I am afraid it's the end to his political career.

Actually prostitution is not legal in the U.S. except in one or two counties of the state of Nevada.  It is also a federal felony because he had the prostitute cross state lines. So yes it is illegal along with the moral issues involved. His political career is over.

Hi,
As far as I know prostitution is illegal but going to a prostitute is ligal.  That means: It is illegal either to be a prostitute and / or to seduce for prostitution and / or to own a bordel.......  but it's perfectly ligal to go to a prostitute and have sex with her (provided it's one's free will).  Am I wrong ?.

I'm pretty sure it is also illegal to pay someone for sex.  Prostitution is illegal, and there would be no prostitution if no one was having sex with the prostitute.  That's the way I've always understood the law.

Elliot Spitzer is not just any American citizen; he is the governor of a large and important state. As such, he has a responsibility to maintain a moral image. In this he failed but he does have an admirable record in uncovering illegal activity.  As a public figure he has a responsibility to always be above suspicion and therefore he should resign.

It seems as if this fiasco will end his political career. Personally I think it's no one's business what he does with his free time but the American society isn't that liberal. It's a shame cause we're talking about someone who did a lot of good for society.

His political career is over. He resigned today because he knows what he did was wrong. Spitzer built his political reputation on rooting out government corruption, and made a name for himself as attorney general as crusader against shady practices and overly generous compensation. He also cracked down on prostitution.

He is quoted as saying:

"Over the course of my public life, I've insisted, I believe correctly, that people regardless of their position or power take responsibility for their conduct. I can and will ask no less of myself."
