Baseball arbitration is a process in which if  a player is signed to a contract that he feels is unfair in comparison to other players in the league of relatively the same talent level, he can then take his contract to an arbitrator and have it nullified. This process is only available until June 1st of each season. After that day the player in question must play under the contract that is in place. It is a very big reason why a lot of unproven but talented players (i.e.-David Wright, Tommy Hanson) have to play AAA baseball until that date. When they get called up just after June 1st, it puts them at a disadvantage when negotiating a contract. It also minimizes the risk a team would have to take with an unproven talent.
