How significant are domain name extensions? How does it affect SEO and the site's Google ranking (it if does)? .org, .net, .com...What else do we have?

It is said that a good domain name would be a name that is easily remembered. Most people will search the internet with '.com'. That is why other extension is not as popular as the '.com'. So, in cases where users are searching online, it is highly possible that they would not be able to find a website with other extension. For an example, when a person is actually searching for the website 'example.net', he might have type 'example.com' in the address bar. Therefore, this is why '.com' is highly preferable from webmasters point of view.

.com is the most commonly used top-level domain extension on the Internet. Many others exist, however. These other six TLDs were part of the original Internet specifications for domain extensions:

  • .int
  • .mil
  • .net
  • .org

In recent years, many new TLDs have been deployed on the Internet. Some of these are intended for broad use worldwide, while others are designed to serve special interest groups.
