It is a natural phenomenon that ensures a good fertilization.

Basically the bulbous glands of the male’s penis swell inside the female dog's vagina. The dogs are virtually locked together for 15-20 minutes, during this time the chances for a good insemination rise.

the bulbous gland? the dog's penis grows a bulb on the end of it when he is doing it, all the sperm in a packet, and then it does some time-release action that takes up to an hour. I saw it once just when the dogs were still fighting, but the male was developing the bulb, which seemed to be traveling up the shaft, and I guess it grows all the way to the end.

because the female dog has an unusual strategy for holding onto a mate. They have enormous muscles in their vagina which clamp onto the males appendage during mating. These canines can stay locked up for up to 30 minutes after mating. This appears to be so that the sperm of the mate that the female has chosen has a chance to fertilize the egg of the female to ensure pregnancy.

So there ya have it folk's. It's not ALWAYS the male that trap's the female into getting knocked up. If ya'll had done your homework you might have known that.

If the dogs are "tied", do not try to pull them apart as this could cause damage to either dog. The male's penis swells so that he can stay inside the female to ensure his sperm will enter, in order to conceive. Her vagina's walls clamp on his penis and she relaxes the muscles and lets him go when she is ready.You have to let them be (or best to hold the female) until they unlock. This can be anywhere from 5 min to 1 hour. Do not pour water on them, get the hose, or try to yank them. You just have to wait it out. The female decides when it is time.
