Generally this is addressed by an orthopedic MD. However, any orthopedic specialist, such as a Physical Therapist, Chiropractor, Osteopath, or GP who is board certified in Sports Medicine or a specialist in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation would be qualified to assist with a diagnosis. Since there are several diagnoses that can have hip pain as a symptom - you should consider the person you go to as the starting point of an investigation. A proper diagnosis will lead to a good plan of care that should result in pain and symptom alleviation. Good luck!

A general practitioner can ask you about when it hurts and order x-rays to find out if you have a fracture or arthritis.  You may need an orthopedist or a rheumatologist, but the GP can refer you depending on the problem, or prescribe anti-inflammatory drugs.  There are other possibilities like kidney stones that can give pain near the hip, even when you are not moving.
