A positive blood culture can detect if a person has antibodies for HIV. It doesn't mean that he has the HIV virus but it does mean that there is something that has entered the bloodstream.

The doctor probably asked him that question to try and rule out HIV. There are other bacteria infections that enter the bloodstream that can cause a positive blood culture also. He probably asked as a precaution. If your son is sexually active, he should have an HIV test, just as a precaution to rule out HIV.
