Replacing over flow tube and ball seat. i bought ...

replacing over flow tube and ball seat. i bought a kit to replace the complete innerds of my toilet. i don't know how to remove the flush valve that is in there. i have the entire tank off of the toilet. the problem is, i can see that it is screwed in, but there is no place to get a hold of it to unscrew it out, to be able to put a whole new one in.

Drain all of the water out of the toilet. When you have done that, remove all the parts you can remove that you are going to replace . Then either slide the old flush valve up the water inlet tube till its off or pull the tab on each side till it disconnects from the tab.

i have the entire tank off of the toilet, the problem is, is that i can't unscrew the darn flush valve from the tank!!!!!

penny, it is attached by a jam nut on the bottom of the tank. You will probably need a wrench with large jaws, or if it has notches, you can insert the point of a screwdriver in the notch and tap it with a hammer to loosen the nut.

the ring holding the flush valve on the tank on the bottom is glued to the bottom of the tank (toilet circa 1974) so i just cleaned up the old flush valve put on a new rubber ring on the bottom and installed a new water valve and put it back together. i hope it lasts a few more years. thanks for your suggestions.

penny, you're welcome. It is strange that they would glue the parts together, but I've seen lots of weird home repairs that made me scratch my head in puzzlement. What you did is what I would have done. It will probably last you for a long time.

turn the water off to the toilet then flush it.disconnect the water supply line then on each side of the tank on the bottom you will see a big screw and a nut.take them off.then pull the tank off.in the middle you will see a big rubber gasket take that off then the big nut.unscrew that and that will remove the overflow tube.put the new rubber gasket on the bottom of the new overflow tube the put it back in and tighten the nut.make sure you put it back in in the same position as the old won was in .you will need a new tank to bowl gasket that goes over the nut and a new set of tank bolts.when putting in the tank bolts start with the screw,metal washer,rubber washer.put it in the hole.the same with the bottom only in reverse.slide rubber washer over screw and then metal washer then the nut.
