Our deck is splintering and needs to be sanded a bit. Is this possible or would it ruin the finish?

If you sand it, it will need to be restained and waterproofed.

But don't let that stop you.  If  your deck is splintering, it can get further damaged if you leave it alone from the elements.  Better to fix it right.

Some splinters, if it's just in a board two, can be glued back down with carpenter's glue.  Dries clear.
