My furnace makes rattling and cluncking noises when it is off. Could it be that there is a rodent in there? Or is it something else?

It could be.  I once found a frog in a furnace at one house I worked on.  I had a squirrel climb down my chimney once and get into my basement through an open clean out door.  If you do have a roof rat or squirrel or bird in your furnace, repair the screen on your chimney after you let it out.
