I'm thinking of buying a car, what car would you recommend as far as quality and price? Not easy to answer without some guidlines, huh! What's your budget and how will you use it, just 4x6's or Fine Art Prints?

Rich

I have a Canon Powershot A1100 IS and I'm very happy with it. Decent price and good quality. And Canon is a good brand.

When buying a ddigital camera there a few things to take into consideration in chosing a certain model.  First you have to ask yourself what kind of pictures am I going to take? Second qwuestion to ask is Where will I be taking most of the photo's? After you have answered those questions you shouldn be able to figure out what type of camera you need,  The types of cameras available are as follows: The basic point and shoot. The title really is self exsplanitory. This camera will not have a large menue. Some come with zoom lens or wide angle. Next you have a ponit and shoot with manual contols. This is still a small camera that has a fixed lens. The major differance would be that you would be able to change appeture and ISO. This camera is great for both just point and shoot or going manual so you have some control over your photos. And lastly is a DSLR. This camera has all of the bells and whistles. You can change lens and all setting . Good for An ameature  and professional alike.

He's right. I use my camera for 3 basic things. Snapshots, documenting and taking photos of textures for use in my CG art. My Canon works quite well for that, and as I'm no longer into art photography, I didn't see the sense of spending a fortune to get a camera with features I don't need.

I think there are quite a few cameras to consider, my personal favorite is the canon sx210is, I love how it looks, small, great zoom and really useful to keep on you - also has a great wide angle lens. Some thoughts

  • get a camera you're going to use, that's why I stay away from SLRs - they are too big to be convenient
  • sx210 digital camera - what I have, like I said really flexible
  • The t2i looks amazing though if you want a great affordable slr that does hd movies at 1080p - canon t2i
I have a blog about the SX210is where I'm trying to cover lots of info, tips, reviews, etc. dpreview.com is good so is snapsort to compare cameras. There is also this cool article on comparing cameras.

If money is no object go for the Leica S2 - it will cost you $30,000 but it's the best digital camera money can buy

Although it's not always necessary, I've always managed to find the best balance of quality and price when buying a second hand camera in good nick.

It's often the case that the latest releases are sold very expensively because of a new feature that may very well be of no use to you. Are those extra 5MP going to make a difference to your prints? Will you ever use a 12000 ISO speed that produces buckets of noise? Do you need to shoot 8 frames/second to capture the action at a sports game?

Do some research, cameras come in broadly 5 categories:

1. compact
2. bridge
3. beginner DSLR
4. prosumer DSLR
5. professional DSLR

This page will help you research and choose the best compact camera: http://www.photography-art-cafe.com/best-compact-camera.html

My favourite compact is probably the Canon Powershot SD 4000 IS / IXUS 300 HS for its all-round quality and specs.

As far as DSLR's go I really like the Canon EOS 550 D / Rebel T2i / Kiss X4 because the image detail is stunning and it has a good ISO range. I'm also a fan of the Nikon D300s for its image quality, accurate metering and build quality.
