220 and 240 are  determinded byu the amps it carries,30-40 amp 220v is for stoves welders ranges even ac unit.240 is larger 50 -60 amp up to 100 + amps depending on its use,240 is a 3 phase system that is for commercial use applications.220 is a single phase which is common house current source.
