My husband was diagnosed with depression. (He had been clinically depressed for many years) I have dealt with this for over 20 years, and read about many "why's." Mostly, it seems to come from "anger turned inward". Medication is given and yet therapy is ignored-a big mistake in my opinion. Your friends "anger" may be from many things-and be deeply imbedded, or denied, ignored or something they do not want to deal with. If you can draw out where the anger is from, by getting them to talk, ask questions and really listen, without comments or judgement, that may help. His not caring about his life, of course, goes with depression. He needs a reason to care about his life, a purpose for having this "experience." Professional help is recommended-naturally, but not always available. I personally believe in the power of the soul to basically want to survive-we all have a purpose for this lifetime. If he believes in a particular religion-this is an avenue to explore. Maybe he has given thought to "reincarnation"? This lifetime may be incredibly hard, and painful, but getting through this time is something he CAN do...and this experience can be overcome. They will just have to come back and experience it again, if they don't want to do it now. (this may not be acceptable to some people). He may think when his body "dies," so goes his soul. Tell him that his soul lives on, no matter what, and without a body, everything is harder. He will still feel depression, but have not drugs. My husband found my approach to life and my belief system rational-and it helps him to think of "getting through" the tough times, by knowing it is worth the pain, and struggle...even during bouts of depression. Good Luck! It may seem futile and hopeless, but you may open a door and be able to reach him.

You should tell him that if he's so depressed that he doesn't care about his life - that's his choice. If he wants to die in a couple of years - that's his choice. Each and everyone of us is responsible for himself, and if the person prefers to end his life through drugs - I honestly think not much can be done to avoid that.
