Discuss harry's answer to: Dependence of an induced magnetic dipole on the field that induces it.

Can you show mathematically that diamagnetism alone exerts a repulsive force. Thus, diamagnetism can produce levitation. Note that a magnetic field induces a magnetic dipole with an opposite field to ...

In Bill’s answer, the correct “dependence of an induced magnetic dipole on the magnetic field that induces it” is given for atoms. In this case, the magnetic field acts as a torque, adding precession at the Larmor frequency to the orbital motion of the electrons. The diamagnetism produced  by the precession causes repulsion between the magnetic field and the induced magnetic dipole. This effect can be exploited to filter out diamagnetic impurities such as aluminium, mercury, water, etc., for instance by levitation, using strong magnetic fields (see Paul Wittenberg  Jr’s comment to Bill’s answer). However, Bill did not answer my question concerning the case where the magnetic dipole is induced by the action of a magnetic field (Lorentz’s force) on a charge or charges moving on a straight line, thereby generating a periodic motion at the gyration or cyclotron frequency. The question is whether in this case also the induced magnetic dipole is repelled by the magnetic field

A clash of ideas is not a catastrophe, it is an opportunity. Only its constructive conclusions should be allowed to leave the academic framework.

Harry, you are entirely incorrect.

This is high school level material as you posed it, and I gave you a high school level answer hoping that you could understand it.

It soon enough became clear that you lack even that rudimentary understanding and merely googled a few terms to throw around, as a substitute for learning.  Therefore, I broke it down to an elementary school level discussion so that you could get a better grasp of the material.

Apparently you cannot comprehend sixth grade material because you are an atheist therefore unteachable.  Will it next be necessary to condescend to kindergarten for atheists to grasp the material?

Pardon that I teach at the university to postdoc level.  That means, I usually take only students who are ready for the real study, not just simpleminded Googling.  Using incidental jargon you have overheard does not make you an expert.

Consider that you have failed the class on magnetism.  Frankly I had hoped for better than you.

Bill, My question is not about theism, deism or atheism but about magnetism. It is about moving electrical charges in a static magnetic field. Assume that these moving charges are protons, not electrons in atoms. Assume that the magnetic field is not constant in space. It may have a constant gradient. Do you think that such a magnetic field could repel the protons from a region of high magnetic field to a region of low magnetic field?

I wouldn't have had that much patience with Harry.  He can't help but impose atheist dogma on everyone and will resort to every con in the book to do so.

Personally, I liked your explanation.  That grade school unit should have made it simple enough even for Harry to grasp it.

Anselmo, the fact that Harry was tossing around terms that he obviously did not grasp virtually at random made it clear that he was not here to learn, but rather, to insult and disrupt.

We have ways of dealing with these people.

BTW, I read your email last night.  Let's pick up where I left off in chapter two of the paper I sent you.  I think you are starting to get a better grasp of the material.

As to strength of materials and fields: note in chapter 1 how magnetic flux can affect metallic bonds in dissimilar metals.  Also we need to work on ferromagnetic alloys a bit.

Rocmike you are Bill and Anselmox instead of setting up fake e-mail accounts just look in the mirror and tell them.

"Harry" is one of Physicalist-dfrogpong's 200+ screen names.  Talk about a nasty minded hateful old bigot.  Good call Bill.
