I have an old closed credit card that I have been trying to pay off for years with Household Bank.  This is my only debt. I am a sr. and disabled so I do not have the funds to pay it off.  Every month I have sent the minimun which is 85% interest. I have begged them to lower the almost 30% interest rate they now charge me. They refuse saying they do not have any lower rates.  I have never been late all these years. I now have to choose between paying them or getting my meds.  A debt counseling service is too expensive for me.  I will have to just stop paying them to stay alive. What can I do? Thank you.

Hi Linn.  Unfortunately, credit card companies are doing this all around and it is hurting those who have always paid on time.  Some of these companies are as crooked as the day is long, and just a contributing factor to our failing economy.  Please don't feel that you have to choose between your meds or paying these crooks.  Keep yourself well, put your health first.

Be well and Best of luck to you dear.

linn,

I believe you have done for many years what is right, but now is a matter of your health.  You have a ''hardship'' due to your medical condition, have you told your creditors this? linn, at this time and point in your life is credit that important?  Other than for moral value, what do you have to lose if you stop making your payments?  These are some of the questions you have to ask yourself.

I'd have to say if I were in your shoes the choice would be easy, I'd choose the meds.

you say you are a senior,if you are not in need of purchasing anything that requires good credit then forget the bills and buy the meds. Stop sending them money you need to concentrate on your health, thats the most important thing in your  life right now.Even if you do want to make a purchase, your credit wont get that messed up from one black mark against you.Good luck

linn,

get your meds first, you have a legitimate hardship.  your creditors can wait!
