The last major land battle ended with Cornwallis's surrender at Yorktown October 19, 1781.  Preliminary treaty terms were agreed to in November 1782.  The American Revolutionary War ended with the Treaty of Paris signed September 3, 1783.  The treaty was ratified by Congress January 14, 1784, formally ending the war.
