Yes. He is quoted in the book Buffalo Soldier Regiment: History of the Twenty-Fifth United States Infantry. The author is John H. Nankivell. See page 135.

Pierre: Best answer -to date- not yet proven and probably no direct connection other than he and Custer were in the same Army in the same period. I am a Partello family researcher. I would not completely rule it out, but have no direct evidence.

I find him listed as a clerk in the 1874 DC City Directory. I believe he was a clerk in the War Dept. He lived at 2145 K.St NW. This is also the same address as his father Phillip and brothers Sully(Sulivan) and Edward. I suspect that he received a commission as a result of his marksmanship abilities. I think the Army would have cultivated and protected his notoriety then, tending not to put him in harms way.

I have seen the reference in his 1934 NYT obit to  line"Was in the Custer Campaign."  But was that byline based on fact or merely some editor looking for sensation? I have not found anything conclusive yet in my research.

Obviously he was not in the 7th Calvary at LBH or he would not have lived until 1934. I haven't found him on any 7th lists yet either. He seems to have been more associated with assignments to the 5th Infantry and shooting competitions. He also wrote as a correspondent for columns that I would term of a 'western outdoorsman" nature.

Although from DC, he, his wife, and son Col. Joseph K. Partello, are all buried at the Presidio, San Francisco.
