Let me ask you a question on waht level do you want to start on??? You will have unlimited openings as for pay depends on what you learn in School and what courses you take you may only start out on the streets but if you want Forensics or a Crime Sene Investagator you should talk to a school counsler. Then i would ask about at what level you would like to start at the local CSI level or go to the  Federal level in this field. Go ask at the local level what pay you get and chance for advancementthey offer. Then Ask the Federal level the same questions as they will tell you all you do is ask. But my self it is best not to se the innternet as they are not always right they sell you a bill of goods that can end up costing you a lot of money for nothing as most are ripoffs scams and all yhey want is your money. So my advice is ask at the Collages and Universites for there advice to me this is where you would start as they know the in's and out's of this. Now in your local Area you may be limited as to the Sheriff Department or local Police Department i suggest you ask on the Federal level as your chances are unlimited you start out on a entrary level  then go up from there depending on how much you learn and how quickley with little or no mistakes you make from there on the doors are open all you have to do is walk through them. BUT DONT BE TAKEN BY INTERNET SCAMS OR RIPOFFS. Best of luck to you.

Nicole if i were you i would stay with your first choice but by the way it sounds you are confused on which direction to go.Yes there are always opep in the medical field but consider the fact that your 1st choice is a foresics lab if i were you i would stick with it. As the need for lab tec's. is growing personially i would stick with it as it has every potential in the wourld of openings and your chances for advancement are unlimited if you work hard at it and do your best you can do and don't be afraid to work for what you want. As for the economy in time it will get better we are about at the low point of it, and no you dont start out as a street cop you start at an entery level position and work your way up.My self i am a Pearalegal ( Legal Assistant ) There are to many drawbacks to the medical field as you start out at the worst of the worst jobs then if you can handle it you can go up the ladder but just think of bedpan duty then uo from there. So no i say stick with your first idea look at the possablities first then work hard to get there as a good foresics lab or investigation side... the demand is there but you work for it and i mean learn all you can as this field is still new but all is needed if that is what you want. I am sure you have heard NO before But keep on trying as  you said ( but my heart is in forinsics ) so go after it dont settle for less as there are to many people stuck in the health care industry now looking for work which is not there so they stay. Everything and every day brings us a new challange but if you start now it is wide open.As they dont advertise the  foresics lab or investigation side you work to get it.
