It means that they will be in jail until they die... jail for life is not for a specific number of years. Also sometimes, like in the Madoff case, he is almost 80 years old and was sentenced to 120 years, meaning that he is there for life.
The years of a life sentence will vary and is often determined by more than one's longevity. From region to region the predetermined length will vary, sometimes as short as 20 years. Very few actually hold an individual their full lifetime... which is why there is another classification ... Life with no chance of parole. Just one determination is whether that individual is any longer considered to be a threat to society. Sadly we have seen that at times very poor decisions have been made.
thanks for the info it was very helpful i just wanted to know cuz you see it in movies (which I know isn't always correct) and young people get "life" then they get out in like 20 years or so like you said or sometimes you hear people get 2 life sentences back to back and I didn't understand like what were they gonna do keep them in jail till they died then bring them back and make them serve another sentence lol but thanks again
