While it is possible to learn the basics of using a metal or wood CNC router in just a few hours, in general it takes 30 hours of hands-on practice to avoid some of the most costly mistakes. The beginner CNC operator does not always know the limitations of their cutting tools, and may design programs that take their cutting gantry outside the limits of their table, causing the machine to crash. However, after 30 hours of hands-on practice, the beginner has usually made all of the typical mistakes that plague beginners under the watchful eyes of an experienced teacher. While there are online videos for learning to program a wood cnc router, nothing beats hands-on practice.
