First you have to take a steel crochet hook and poke holes in the material where you want to crochet, then you take your yarn and start with a single crochet all the way around. Then just complete whatever pattern of stitches you are going to use. This is the same method for crocheting on the tops of towels.

It is much easier to use a small blanket stitch with a sewing needle & crochet thread around the edge to be crocheted. Then crochet in the free loop of the blanket stitch. Result: no struggle trying to get hook through material; no large holes; one happy camper (crocheter).
