Should I cover my home heat pump in the winter?

Should I cover my home heat pump in the winter? 

On the one hand, I'm afraid of ice.  On the other hand, I'm afraid to block the airflow.  I just moved into my first home, and the former owner left behind a cover for the heat pump.  Should I use it?
