Basically you'll rip it to MPEG-4, and copy it to the iPod using iTunes. How to do it exactly will depend on your computer and OS.

Ok, if you don't buy it from iTunes...if a dvd that you have is able to be ripped/burned what I do is: rip it to a file using a program called DVD Shrink (free on the internet).  With this program you can get rid of all the extras on the dvd making the compression of the file less and playback better.  Then I have the file on my computer.  Next I use a program called Xilisoft DVD to iPod Convert 4 (search for it on the internet) and it converts the file to a mpeg4 file.  Then I go into my iTunes software and click file, add file (or copy file, whatever it is) to library, and add the mpeg4 file into my library.  For me this is very simple, just make sure you watch where you are placing these files so you don't forget where they are when you go to add them to your library (I know lots of "computer illiterate" people who lose their files, lol!)...not that you are one of them!  Just a warning!  :)  Hope this helps you out. ~Cindy

I have the exact same problem. I have all 3 pirates of the caribbean dvds and a new 80gb ipod classic. I then found out that I couldn't download them onto my ipod using itunes OR realplayer. So what did I do? I tried to download all these wierd programs like dvd decriptor or DVDShrink. BIG mistake! they had all sorts of virus's and spyware and they disconnected my internet connection, forunately i am so used to my computer having problems and breaking down that i managed to clean and restore my computer in 5 days. I'm still searching and asking my friends. A BIG WARNING to everyone, DO NOT download these stupid programs like I did, they will wreck your computer no matter what security you have (i have norton anti-virus and anti-sypware AND firewall) the truth is there is no simple way. I absoloutely hate apple! Trying to get money out of us by making us buy dvds twice!

if anyone disagrees with me or has found a nice simple clean way to copy my dvds onto my ipod PLEASE contact me ASAP on my email-youisachav@yahoo.co.uk , your help would be deeply appreciated

iPod only supports mp4, you must convert your dvd  to ipod first, I always use aimersoft ipod converter suite, it can easily convert dvd video to ipod with high quality, that's very good, you may try it and free download it from its official site:
http://www.aimersoft.com/ipod-converter-suite.html

After you finished conversion, just follow below steps to add your movie to ipod
1. Open iTunes and click "File" to add your videos to iTunes library.
2. plug in your iPod to computer, then iTunes will detect your iPod as a device.
3. Select your iPod device on the left panel of iTunes, click "Movies" tab, check the videos you want to sync and click "Apply", done.
Hope it helps

Only certain videos can be watched in iPod, so I use the third party converter to convert  DVD movies.
