How long can you safely keep raw chicken in the refrigerator before cooking?

Most packaged chicken that you buy today has a "use-by date". This is a good way to know how long before you must cook it, Provided that your refrigerator has an internal temperature of around 36 degrees.
If you are freezing chicken then you can get 6 months out of it before you have to cook it.
Before you prepare a meal with your chicken, smell it. You shouldn't smell anything foul. (no pun intended). Remember: If in doubt, throw it out!
It's not worth getting sick over.
