Yes, it can be the root cause in obstructional sleep apnea. Additional fat around the neck can make the airway narrower, thus creating an obstruction. Currently in the U.S.  weight related sleep apnea is the number one cause. For people with mild to moderate weight related sleep apnea the treatment method is a weightloss program. There are also numerous other reasons outside of weight that obstructional sleep apnea occur.

Obesity is one of the prime reasons for snoring. As a person obese, his /her snoring activity also increases. Snoring has also been a major cause medical for many divorces and its impact on both emotional and physical life is very serious. Although, to a larger extent of the society, snoring has always been considered a social nuisance but it can create typical medical issues if not taken care of.  Snoring is mostly a common occurrence in persons who have a large body mass index. Being overweight leads to sleep apnea and many other harmful diseases like diabetes, heart problems and the metabolic syndromes. Obesity is likely to develop sleep apnea and it is closely related with snoring. Snoring with obstructive sleep apnea gives rise to plenty of health problems, for example, poor quality sleep, daytime fatigue and lower performance at work
