It can have 2 meanings: Equal  or the beginning of an expresion at a certain cell e.g at cell B5 you type:  =sum(A4:A8)        at that cell (B5) you'll store the sum of A4 till A8

= at the beginning means to calculate an expression.

= in the middle means to calculate TRUE if the left side is equal to the right side

so 1=2 just shows as the text, but =1=2 computes as FALSE.
