I have a Maxtor 160 GB hard drive that won't boot up. I installed a new WD 500 GB and set it to master with the Maxtor as slave. The Maxtor drive shows up in my computers drive manager as healthy but I can't access the data. Is there a way to retrieve my data from the Maxtor drive?

Set your tower on the floor facing upright. Remove both panels. The screws are on the back of the tower, with two or three on each side.

  • Step 2
Locate the existing hard drive in the computer. Remove the two cords in the back of the hard drive. A long, flat cord with three connectors is the "IDE Cord." The white connection tab with different wires is the "Power Cord." Unscrew the hard drive from the case.

  • Step 3
Place the old hard drive into a static bag. A static bag is a small silver bag. This keeps the hard drive safe from damage that static may cause.

  • Step 4
Screw the left panel back onto the tower. Lay your computer on the floor or a table on that side. Mount your Maxtor 160 hard drive in the case using two screws. Four is unnecessary.

  • Step 5
Plug the "IDE Cord" into the long slot on the Maxtor 160 hard drive. Push it securely into the connector. It may be a snug fit. Before you continue, check the connection. The pins need to be completely inside the "IDE Cord."

  • Step 6
Insert the "Power Cord." The next set of pins, which is a smaller connector, houses the "Power Cord." Push itin tightly as this is tougher than the "IDE Cord."

  • Step 7
Place the right panel back onto the tower and attach the screws. Plug all components into the back of the tower. Turn on the computer.

  • Step 8
Open the disk drive. Insert your Windows operating system disk. Reboot the PC and install Windows
