A lot.

More than a million.

A million is not quite realistic.  It is well over 25 million.

Still, this question needs to be clarified.  Do you mean how many business are operating, or how many are owned and operated in the united states?  Do you mean corporations, or are you going to include non-profit ventures as well.

Do you mean all companies, including sole-proprietorships that are not registered as corporations?  This will skew any results you are interested in.

According to the IRS, based on tax return information, there were over 28 million companies in 2004(Corporations, Partnerships and Nonfarm Sole Proprieterships).

According to the Office of Advocacy, as of 2006 there were 26.8 million.

Hope that helps.

The U.S. Department of State reports that, as of 1995, there were 22.5 million businesses in the United States.  If you add in another 2.5 million family farms, the total number of enterprises would be about 25 million.  Of these, 16.4 million were non-farm, sole proprietorships, 1.6 million were partnerships, and 4.5 million were corporations.

Of these 25 million enterprises, fewer than 1%, or about 250,000, employed more than 500 people.  And virtually all of these large employers would have been incorporated, in order to limit the liabilities of their investors.

JoftheA's answer (above) makes a good point in asking if you wish to include non-profits.  I have seen a claim that 30% of all U.S. organizations are eleemosynary (that is, charitable).  That would make the total number of employers roughly 36 million, with 30% of us working at animal shelters, state universities, health research charities, police departments, etc.

The State Department's document is here; http://countrystudies.us/united-states/economy-4.htm .
