You can change your AOL account to a free plan if you have broadband service (like cable or DSL).  You keep your AOL mail account.  Use keyword CANCEL or PAY PLAN.

You can cancel your AOL account from CANCEL but it's hard to find.  If I remember right you can also go to cancel.aol.com .
