You need to find out which safety standards the manufacturer's model complies with - that is the key bit of information. Don't worry if you can't find the box (it's probably long gone by now!), there should be labels or marks on the seat which indicate its safety standards.

I cover this topic in my article 'Choosing A Child Car Safety Seat: 4 Tips Every Parent Should Know'- please do just remember that if the seat has been in use the sun or general wear and tear can make its structure weak over time.. and of course if it is a second-hand child car safety seat then you don't know its history. Asked: Convertible or Infant Car Seat?

Did you use a convertible car seat right away? I used an infant seat and switched to a convertible later but in retrospect, I wish I had used the convertible the entire time.
