Hi Dixie,
I hope I can be direct and blunt without having to sugarcoat my words.  There are many possible explanations for that but the most likely explanation is:  He is a player, hiding from you other relations (married ?), cheater, playing with your feelings, not a man to trust.....  The best advise I can give you is: Move on and close the door tightly behind you.  The sooner you delete him from your life (and memories) the better.  He'll only use you and break your heart,  Nothing good will come out from him.
