Changing Careers in Mid-Life

I'd like to change my career in mid-life. Is there any age limit for a change of career? What if you don't have relevant experience in the field or industry you'd like to switch to?

My friend, it's your life, you can do anything you want with it. And there's never any age limit for improving yourself and your situation. There's also no age limit for going to college to learn what you need to know. It takes some courage, sure, but if it's what you want, I say go for it. I didn't make my dreams come true by being scared to take chances, and you shouldn't either.

If a little knowledge is a dangerous thing, then that makes me a burning truck filled with TNT hurtling through a rocket fuel depot.

Based on your questions it seems you are not fully knowledgeable about the new career choice. This is the place to start. Before you “quit your day job” find out as much as you can about the field you want to go in to. There maybe stuff on line; you could call businesses, even interview some people with this vocation. If you can, volunteer in some way to see what it’s like.  This could give you some experience too. Knowledge is the key in making this happen. A few years ago my brother wanted to start a new career.  Rather than taking the courses and testing required while he was working he waited until he was fed up with his work place.  He quit.  Problem was after the courses were finished he was not able to pass the finial exams.  In this profession you are only allowed to take the exams once.  The disappointment of not making it was more than doubled by not having a job.  It made his life so much more stressful to go this route.  Nevertheless, my brother found another job in his first profession and is very happy with the new company he works for.  Point being, don’t be afraid to go for something new.  Just consider it part of this change to figure out the best way to go about it.  Age probably isn’t something you should allow to hold back.

I changed careers in midlife with the help of a business coach. Working together, we were able to put together a plan for my setting goals, writing a resume, and choosing from various offers that I eventually received. Age is a factor, but you can also use it to your advantage. Take a look at this web site for starters.

It is said that the only thing that is certain in life is change. Though this phrase has been proved quite many times, there are some situations where a change seems not only implausible but also impossible and ridiculous. A job or a profession change at an age of forty or fifty is one of those situations where people may look at you quizzically with one question – why?

You can change your career in the mid-life if you get better opportunity. There is no age limit to change career. I do not prefer to change career if not have sufficient knowledge.

Well most people I know (including me) is wanting a radical career change. They are usually sick of the corporate culture and they are wanting something completely different.

But if you are making a career change, consider these:
Do you have enough time and money to go back to school? If you are in your 30's and have a family, devoting enough time to re-study might be difficult.

You have to be very motivated to do this. A lot of people are very succesful doing career change, like me. I describe myself as a very persuasive person. Despite of the lack of training, I was patient  and very observant to dig information that help me succeed. In short, I learned a new craft on my own.

I used to be an hr manager in a multinational company. Now, I am currently selling prescription glasses and contact lenses, but I didn't  go to a medical school to understand what is needed. It may sound easy in writing but it took me a year before I was able to lift myself. But the journey is so great, I would love to do it again!

Also it would be very helpful, if you really want this midlife career change , is to find a very good career counselor. I never hesitated to ask for help. Career counselor will not simply give you advice but will definitely help you strategize as well.
