Ceilings ...

My brother and sister-in-law live in Syracuse, NY. There house was built sometime in the early 1900s.. Their ceilings are not your typical plaster or sheetrock ceilings. They actually have some sort of material on them. We have been trying to figure out how to repair them but we don't know exactly what they are, any ideas of what they used in that part of the country in the early 1900s?
