What is causing my westie's hair to turn reddish brown around her mouth and feet?
I'm guessing genetics and/or age.
She (?) is licking and chewing on her feet, maybe allergies or just habit out of boredom. Around the mouth is just from her saliva. Take her in to be checked for allergies, sometimes a allergy shot will help or changing her food
It is most likely saliva. You can get good shampoo and special dog cleaner for white dogs. Look for one that is for around eyes, those are usually safer, and specific for stains on white or light colored dogs. Her feet is probably because she is cleaning her feet. Does she have excess hair on her feet between her pads and toes? If can be an irritant to dogs and sometimes causes them to like and fuss with their feet more. Remember that looks are not everything in dogs or people.
I have a beagle mix that is mostly white, with some red spots on her, and she get the reddish fur around her mouth and on her feet. I notice it gets worse depending on the season. It's definitely an allergy, and it starts on her feet and when she scratches her mouth, it transfers there. Take your dog to the vet and see it it could be allergies.
My beagle also gets staining from drinking tap water. Something in it causes her to have tear stains. She doesn't get the stains if I change over to bottled water, which doesn't happen all that often.
