Think of the sun heating the inside of your black car if you have black vinyl seat covers.  Think of how much slower it heats if the paint is white and so are the seats.  What is different?  Absorption and radaition.

The same with the Oxygen and Nitrogen in the air.  Solar energy charges O-2 and N-2 molecules in the air.  Oxgen radiates blue-green and Nitrogen radiates yellow-orange.  Together you will see almost leaf green fluorescence in the air.

If the air gets hit with enough electrons and photons, and it fights with our magnetic field, we have the Aurora Borealis and Australis.
