Why do my cats want my hair?

I have 2 cats about 2 yrs old. I have very long hair, and when I have a loose hair the cats go crazy, climbing all over me to eat it! If I hold it out in both hands straight they will chew on it like they're flossing their teeth. Has any one ever heard this before or do I just have weirdo cats?

Yes, I think your cats are weird, but I have one who does the same thing. I have a lot less hair because of it, and she is getting a little bored now. Just let your cats pull it out and they will probably get tired of it too. It's kind of a phase I think.

Cats tend to eat wierd things to make up for something thier body is lacking in. They might need more fiber in thier diet or more meat if you only feed them dry food.  Try giving them a little bit of can food as a treat and see if they stop eating your hair. Cooked chicken or turkey is a great treat as well.

my cats do the same, they think its a toy... i bought some fake hair at a store and tied it to a door knob and that seems to keep them out of my hair because they play with that.

it's pretty rare actually, but yea my cat is weird like that too.... shes totally obbsessed with hy hair! anytime its down she follows me around and meows loudly! and rolls and hops all over me to no end until she can get it... she acts like a lil drug fiend or something. when i sit or lay down and there she is ! snuggling up by my neck getting tangled in my hair. shes so silly!! from day one as a kitten  she did this. its cute, and sweet, i know shes being affectionate, but its also very annoying sometimes!!! shes learned not to do this when im sleeping after many a times iv woken up sleepily and knocked her off the bed.

I have 2 friends who's cat's do it to me. I have no reason why. They go crazy and almost at the skull. and just chew and chew...

My friend said she's never done it to her.

The only true limit to your realization of tomorrow will be your doubts of today.

i can not reaaly aswer that but my friend has the same thing with 2 cats  let me know when you find out god bless you like peoeple they like your hair because they love youa ll more

I strongly disagree with the folks that say that your hair is a "toy".  My hair is your average short men's haircut (maybe 2 inches long per hair on average), so that's not much of a toy.

My cat is an indoor cat and will get on the back of the sofa behind me and tug at my hair like an outdoor cat would probably pull on green grass for roughage in their diet.  The first time my cat did this was when she was very young in her "kitten teenager" age, I thought she was being hostile, but since that wasn't like her I waited for a bit to see what she would do instead of instantly brushing her away like I was initially inclined to do, but never never ended up doing.  She just continued pulling and occasionally would put a paw down on my head to try to pull my hair out.

She has always done this from time to time since kittenhood and is now 14 years old, so this isn't something a cat is likely to grow out of unless you constantly brush your cat away and they get the idea that they can't do it.

I've always had two theories as to why cats do this.  1)  They think your hair is roughage, like eating grass outside.  2)  It's a grooming ritual, much like cats do with other cats.  The fact that my cat doesn't also lick my hair, like a cat would do with another cat when grooming, makes me more inclined to think my first theory is accurate.

What do you think?  If my theory that this is a roughage replacement is true, it'd be interesting to see if it's mostly indoor cats that exhibit this behavior, or whether outdoor cats and indoor/outdoor cats do this as well.  So, if you can post whether your cat is a strictly indoor or outdoor cat or whether your cat is an indoor/outdoor cat, I think it would be helpful to the discussion.  Thanks.
