Why do cats stop eating?

Most cats stop eating when they do not feel well.  My cat is 17 years old turning 18 this month.  He has always loved to eat, but now that he is old his intestines do not work as well as they used to and he then begins to suffer with constipation.  In that condition he cannot eat.

The vet gave me a liquid prescription for him.  I use it whenever I see him not being able to have a bowel movement.  Thank God, it's been working.
