how to stop a cat from spraying.do they have to be fixed to stop this

There are several approaches you can take but not all may work for your situation. Castration of males or spaying of females can reduce the cat’s motivation for spraying. Early neutering of your kitten will in most cases stop your cat from spraying in the future. Neutering after spraying activity has commenced may reduce it.

For older cats, one study showed that
87% of all male cats stop spraying after castration
78% stop immediately
9% stop in a few months
13% keep spraying

Another study showed that 77% of cats reduced or stopped spraying within six months of being neutered or spayed.

You can also try using anti anxiety drugs, which are available from your vet and may be useful in preventing your cat from spraying. Discuss the use of drugs with your vet.

Clomicalm and valium are drugs available only from Veterinarians and are used for treating spraying problems in cats. Some people report that their cats lose their personality and become zombies when on anti anxiety drugs.

yes, unless your going to mate him,or if you can put up with the smell.many catteries have the same problems ,and they go to pet stores for cleansers and you will be able to talk to other people some products they have on the net that work better then the pet stores,.but i can,t remember the name.call a catterey their experts.good luck debbie

Cats can spray for various reasons.  Has something changed in your house? New cat, dog, new people etc?

Neutered pets usually don't spray, but some do.  There are feliway sprays available that sometimes work and also meds you can give.  Ask your vet what is available.

Yes, nuetering will help in 99% of cases. I have 3 male cats here ranging in age from 8 yrs to 16 yrs. They are all nuetered and they are indoor and outdoor. The only time I had a problem was when a stray cat started hanging around. After I took it to the shelter there was no more spraying. And that came from only one of my cats.

It is best to have him fixed anyway, it will give him other things to focus on.

Hi;

The cat does need to be fixed. However, it is no guarantee they will stop, but it is your best shot.
