why do cats bite? any suggestions for my 8 1/2 week old kitten to stop?
Kittens bite and attack anything that moves. They are predators who are practicing stalking, pouncing and attacking. It will get better! It has nothing to do with being taken away from mom too early - it's just instinct. Try not to play with your kitten with your hands. Use toys on strings, like a Kitty Tease, or other toys that keep your hands away from the kitten's teeth and claws. If the kitten bites you, don't yank your hand away or wave it around - he will think it's an invitation to play. Stop moving your hand and give a sharp "UH UH!!" The instant the kitten lets go, toss him a toy or distract him with string, etc. If he doesn't let go, gently blow in his face. Do not punish a kitten for these attacks - he won't understand and it will either make him fear you, or make him aggressive.
Biting is a natural behavior. It is a normal part of their play. Cats may also bite gently as a sign of affection, this is much the same as a human hug. Kittens will learn how to bite without really hurting their human companions in time, if your kitten is too rough you might pull away and say "no" in a firm voice. Keep in mind though that to a cat play is often a little rough but even so they are showing love.
Cudos to Caxie, and Gene78, you are both right on the money. Biting is a natural instinct for cats as well as an expression of affection, when they are in a loving mood. But as Caxie said if the biting becomes to frequent or painful, diversion is the best method. I had a cat that every morning at 6am would climb on my chest and bite my nose, not out of aggression, but out of love. However, sometimes she would get carried away and bite so hard she would draw blood. I just had to tell her that if she wanted to give mommy a kiss she had to be gentle, it took 2 or 3 times of telling her to be gentle, and low and behold, she lightened up on her overbearing kisses. She died a year and a half ago at the age of 17 and I still miss those early morning kisses.
One of the reasons cats/kittens will bite was explained to me by my vet. Sometimes when the cat/kitten is being petted or is playing, it will all of a sudden bite because it gets overstimulated by the activity and doesn't know what else to do. Usually, when that happens, its best to just pull away. If the pet makes a habit out of it, a light spritz from a spray bottle or trying the methods that Caxie suggested is the best course of action.
Good luck! My cat is 17 months old and she plays attack hands and feet. They are playful creatures and just don't know that it can hurt.I've had her just when she was a wk. old ( she was given to me when a friend found her being tossed around by playing dogs using her as a play toy tossing her in the air) I fed her with a eye dropper every 4 hrs. 24-7. She thinks I'm mommy and when she gets mad at me she'll bite my hand. So they also can show there feelings with biting, they don,t know how else to express themselfs. On the otherside she is also a very affectionate cat. Since your kitten is so young, get her some small stuffed animals and squeaky toys, It,ll help keep her occupied where she might bite the toys instead of you. Cindy
