You can yell at a cat till you turn blue in the face but you must catch them in the act of doing what you do not like and spritz them with water in the face to stop them from doing what you dislike.\

Cats are smart and unlike dogs if you abuse them they will leave you.  They will not take it they have lots of people they go to for food and if you do not spade or nueter them they are very intelligent and have their people throughout the community.

In fact a Tomcat can travel 20 miles or more to get what he needs.

So do not underestimate your cat.

Or your man.

Since cats cannot speak English, yelling at them really doesn't make much of an impression aside from being a loud noise. Lady darko's method of squirting them with water is the best accepted way to stop a cat from doing things. You see, cats hate to be humiliated. And squirting them humiliates them. That they remember.

Yes, please get your cat to the vet for an exam. It could have constipation, or a possible urinary tract infection. Cats don't usually stay in litter boxes. They do their stuff and cover it and then get out. Good luck, and I hope your kitty gets better soon.
