Stephen Colbert's rise to national notoriety is a joke ON the American people, who refuse to take a stand or make any sacrifice for the good of the nation, but will rally in support of a superficial pseudo-candidate.  Cain is probably frustrated and disgusted with the political process and feels that joining in Colbert's fantasy campaign is a way of flipping the bird at the overblown beauty contest we engage in every 4 years. 

I'd agree with you, but then we'd both be wrong.

Cain never wanted to be President, he wanted publicity to sell speeches and books, which is what he has done for the last few year. Colbert is not seeking election, he is a political satirist.
