There is a type of cactus commonly called "Jumping Cholla Cactus".  It is said to "jump" on you if you get too close.

I'd love to know the name of this plant too.  I was standing by the side of  a freeway offramp due to a broken down car.  After some time I noticed my skirt was loaded with needles as if there was a large target painted on my skirt.  The funny thing is I didn't really notice any unusual plants. It was bizarre.
