I too believe that it is not necessarily required to buy backlinks. You can try building backlinks by commenting in forums and blogs. Even social bookmarking is effective way to get good backlinks and traffic. These are permanent backlinks and help your site in getting good rankings. You can follow structured SEO methodology.
