Use the equation: Q=m.Cp.dT

m= mass of carbon

Cp = heat capacity at constant pressure(0.305btu/lb K)

dT = change in temperature

Q = heat energy

Q = 1lb*0.305*1

Q= 0.305BTU

 

BTU is a measure of the AMOUNT of energy not the rate. e.g. If you were to heat the carbon 1 degree in half a second it would still require 0.305 BTU.

Let us presume two things: ideal heat transference, and that the carbon is at 20 deg. C.  We intend to raise the sample 1 deg. C.  How many joules must we apply?

The simplified form of the first law of thermodynamics is:

S=J/MdT. 

Where:

S = specific heat
J = joules
M = mass
dT = change in temperature.

Given: C (6-12/13) has S= 0.07927878 . . ..

Given: Calorie/BTU = 4.125 J.

Given: 1 Kg = 2.205122 Lb.

I want you to plug in the values and determine the amount of heat we must impart to raise the temperature of that 1 Lb. Carbon 1 deg C.
