If rebuilding: copy the existing pieces by tracing them onto your new sheet of plywood. Cut, sand rough spots and coat all pieces with water sealer, including the edges and allow to dry. Assemble like the originals.

If building from scratch: Enlarge the drawings, modify to fit your boat' s contours and trace onto new plywood sheets. After cutting, sanding and water sealing, assemble the basic frame pieces with screws on a level work surface:

  • Step 3 anchor blocking
    anchor blocking
Screw three 2x2's the same length as the seat to the bottom of the seat section, spacing them as shown on the drawing. (The front panel screws to the first one, the center support screws to the second one, and the lean back screws to the rear one.)

  • Step 4
Screw into the end grain of the center support to attach it to the sides. Sink the screws flush.

Set the seat on its back edge, and lean it against a support so that you can butt the front panel to the 2x2 blocking and screw it in place, being careful to align the edges.

  • Step 5
Set the seat and front panel assembly onto the ends and center assembly, screw the top of the center support to the 2x2 on the bottom of the seat, and screw into the end grain of the front panel to tie them to the sides.

  • Step 6
The last piece to screw on the boat bench seat is the longer lean back panel. Set it in place and trace along the top of the seat all the way across. Turn the piece so that your line is on the outside and use it as a guide to screw into the back edge of the seat and the 2x2 blocking, keeping your screws below the line.

  • Step 7
To add padding, colored "flags" and assemble the covers for the boat seats, see the article "How to Upholster Boat Bench Seats".
