Why would my tap water turn black?

If it were only red I could make a good guess. And speaking of black, do you remember the old song, Black Is the Color of My Love's True Hair ?

All seriousness aside, if you are on well water then a mixture of manganese and iron can do it. Iron alone will yield a reddish color. Bismuth could be a possibility, but I am not positive about this.
