The Old testament was written before the time Jesus lived, and the New was written after he died.  Jesus did not leave any writings of his own.

We get that muck

h. The question is Why?

Surely Jesus wasn't illiterate. Why then did he not write anything?

Or if he did, why was it not included in the Bible?

We ain't gonna forget what Jesus said.  He made lots of sense.  Atheists ain't made one bit of sense yet and they ain't gonna talk sense either.

Not saying you should forget what Jesus reportedly said. In fact, if anything,
I'm still waiting for most of you so called "christens" to actually start practicing what Jesus preached.
However, the question still remains. Why didn't Jesus write it down himself.
Why only the second hand reports?

Some scholars say he was illiterate and couldn't read or write.

Andrewcranky, "Why only the secondhand reports (of Jesus)?"

Simple.  There is no better way to assure absolute accuracy and full integrity.  That proves a bit inconvenient for atheists, but of course, so does reason.
